Survival Insurance Tips To Improve Gas Mileage on cars, ratings,epa,mpg,100,1999,2000,2001,2002,2006 by Richard Acunto

Here are 10 Tips on how to increase gas MPG (Miles Per Gallon) from Survival Insurance:

1.TRACK YOUR OWN FUEL USAGE AND IMPROVE IT.

This is the most important point.

Most articles out there on fuel economy or saving gas say the most important point is to slow down driving to improve your gas miles. I respectfully disagree. The most important thing is to track your gas usage!

Of course if you never push the pedal you will save a lot of gas, however you will never arrive at where you need to go. I own a BMW and I use the most gas in slow traffic or stop and go driving. My highest miles per gallon ratio is when I am driving 80 Miles Per hour (although what you save on gas you may pay in speeding tickets). My BMW is a 2006 model, six cylinder, I can average 50 MPG by driving smart - on freeways at a decent speed with low pressure on the gas pedal.

And did you know that some cars use the least gas in 5th gear? A car actually has fewer rotations and thus higher MPG when driving in the highest gears - so slowing down may not improve your mpg at all. Try driving in 5th gear more often, it may actually improve your gas usage.

But every truth in this world is only relative, absolutes are unobtainable, every vehicle is different and the fact is you will gain the most gas by watching what works best on your vehicle.

I watch my MPG while I am driving (most new cars display MPG while you drive) and I try and keep it between 30 and 50 MPG on average at all times.

If you don't have an MPG display, just track how many times you fill up your tank and follow the following tips more closely to see your MPG increase greatly...

2. AVOID FLOORING THE GAS PEDAL.

When you start your car from a stop or slow, don't floor your gas pedal to gain speed again. Use your pedal softly to start up again - maintain a softer pressure on the pedal at all times until you gain speed.

3. PREDICT STOPS - COAST AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO A STOP.

Avoid braking as much as possible. Slow your car by down-shifting or coasting to the stop as much as possible.

A bonus tip: Coast at the top of downhill's and accelerate slightly at the end of the drop to maintain speed going back uphill.

Similar to race car drivers - they try not to break in a turn, they slow if needed before the turn and accelerate while in the turn as this gives them more speed and higher traction in making the sharp turn.

Predict your stops and coast as much as possible (if the traffic is stop-and-go, estimate the average speed needed to maintain an easy pressure on the pedal, stops and starts eat up your gas.

Breaking often also wears out your brakes - another expense you can do without.

4. CHECK YOUR TIRES REGULARLY TO ENSURE THEY ARE INFLATED PROPERLY.

Your fuel efficiency drops rapidly when your tires are below the proper inflated amount.

Check them regularly to ensure they have the proper pressure.

5. AVOID DRIVING IN RUSH HOUR.

Like I said, slow driving and stop-and-go will eat your gas.

Stay at work a little longer, pack a dinner for work or see if you can alter your schedule to avoid the traffic jams of rush-hour.

6. TRAVEL LIGHT:

The more Weight you have in your vehicle the more fuel you are going to use to drive.

7. COMBINE TRIPS - "KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE":

If you can reduce the amount of trips you make - you will of course reduce gas consumption. Drive less. Give your car a rest by taking public transportation, riding a bike, or walking.

8. FILL UP YOUR TANK IN THE EARLY MORNINGS:

Gas actually expands and contracts with heat. The cooler gas is the more compact it is. It may not make much of a difference to you, but you will get more gas at the pump when the gas has had time to cool over-night.

Additionally, check different stations after you fill up and see if you are getting the same amount or not - use commercial stations with a seal of approval displayed by the department of measures and standards.

9. LEAVE OFF THE AIR CONDITIONING IF POSSIBLE.

Air Conditioning increases fuel consumption. Also open windows increase drag so try and use the vents on the car to get a nice airflow.

10. WATCH YOUR VEHICLES PERFORMANCE AND CORRECT ANY DISCREPANCIES BEFORE THEY AFFECT YOUR MPG:

If you notice the numbers slipping, then consider how your driving might have changed, and think about getting a tune-up or an oil change or refilling your tires.
