Maruti Suzuki improves focus on Europe by carazoo.com
Maruti Suzuki is Indiaâs biggest car manufacturer, but now the company is looking beyond India to drive sales. The Indian car giant is giving a special thrust to European markets, which are favourable for small cars. The company is planning to increase its exports to Europe by 50 percent by the next fiscal year. So far the company has a target to export 1,50,000 cars by end of 2011 fiscal year.
Maruti Suzuki is currently exporting four models- A-Star, Alto, Maruti 800 and Zen Estilo. Particularly, the A-Star is a best seller. It is sold under the brand name of Alto. The upcoming small car Ritz is expected to push sales higher. After the global meltdown, there has been a surge in demand for small cars and hybrid as they have higher fuel efficiency. Maruti Suzuki has the right kind of portfolio with seven small cars with excellent fuel efficiency ratings. Currently, Marutiâs line of small cars includes, M800, Omni, Zen, Alto, Swift hatch, and A-Star. The upcoming Ritz will be joining the line-up with a new and highly fuel efficient K12 engine. With almost eight products in its kitty, Maruti is in a perfect position to grab a huge market share in Europe.
The European countries have a history of favouring small cars- The market has developed remarkable products like Fiat 500, Fiat Bravo, Volkswagen Beetle, Mini Cooper and others. In the last fiscal year, the western European countries have reported car sales of 1.43 million units. The small cars form a major portion of these sales.
However, market analysts point out that the global economic meltdown has put brakes on the European auto industry. The car market is down by almost 10 percent compared to the previous years suggest analysts.
Maruti Suzuki is mainly focusing on European countries like the UK, France, Hungary, Italy and Netherlands. When launched in 2008, the company had ambitious plans to export 1 lakh A-star cars to Europe. Netherlands had the highest demand for A-star with over 60,000 units. However, Maruti now wants to promote its entire portfolio for Europe. The number has been scaled up by 50,000 units. It also plans to export the 1 lakh units of the car to non-European countries.
Maruti Suzuki has a long history of exports to European countries. According to company reports, Maruti started exporting from the year 1985 and continued till 2004. It was briefly stopped for four years. The company revived sales in 2008 and till dates has sold a cumulative number of 2,80,000 units to Europe an Israel. Further the Indian car company has created a dedicated sea port â the Mundra port for exports of its cars. No other car manufacturer in India has this facility. Under the agreement, if any other car manufacturer wants to utilize the facility, they have to seek approval of Maruti Suzuki. This suggests a strong thrust to export cars to European markets.
Again the company is set to gain from the new scrapping policy introduced I several countries in Europe. Under this system car owners who exchange their old cars for new, fuel efficient cars like small or hybrid cars will be handed out cash incentives of discounts by the local government. This is likely to revive the sinking auto industry and pulI out of recession.
Meanwhile, the parent company Suzuki Motors is trying to empower Maruti to develop cars and new platform independently. The company is scouting for engineers and technocrats who can help the company grow into a global brand. Maruti will function independently of Suzuki Motors Corporation. The change is likely to be completed in 2010. The main focus of this change is to help Maruti gain a firm footing in domestic and European markets.
