Is my engine running too cold?
Had my car about four months now and the engine Temperature Gauge is 99% of the time right at the lowest the needle will go at 60 degrees. It never moves, a few times it's came up a bit to 70 ish but the majority of the time, even when I've driven near enough 50 miles and the majority on the motorway it still says 60. Is this bad? Is my thermostat faulty? I always thought the engine should run at a healthy 90?
There are three temperature range thermostats available for nearly all engines, beginning to open at 71C, 76C and 82C.
If you want to be sure, take the thermostat out and put it in a pot with water and warm it up with a thermometer in it.
If you do not want to go into this trouble, measure the coolant temperature by removing the radiator cap when the engine is cold and run it to normal temperature .
When the thermostat opens, you will feel the hot water coming into the radiator by touching the hose connected at the top side of the radiator.
Measure the coolant temperature with an accurate thermometer.
You may have air trapped in the system, turn the heater fully on and with the radiator cap off, squeeze the heater and radiator hoses repeatetly to bleed the system.
Some engines have an air bleeding screw for this purpose.
Check also that the thermistor [ temperature sensitive resistance device ] is within range.
Check the connecting wires to it, they may be loose or dirty, they will present a high resistance at the connection and it will give you a false reading.
