The Garmin Geko GPS Navigation System consists of a family of two devices. There is the Geko 201 and the enhanced version, the 301. There was also a Geko 101. All of these units provide the same general family of features. There is a high-contrast black and white display, 64 by 100 pixels. At ten ounces it is very light and compact. Operated by five buttons, it is perfect for one-hand use. It can be connected to your computer via USB if desired and is powered by two AAA batteries. Good quality batteries will yield about 12 hours of use.
The unit can save up to 500 waypoints. Using the Garmin Geko GPS Navigation System TracBack feature you can always find your way back from where you've gone. Your track is displayed on the screen as a series of dots. The Geko basically turns the outdoors into a giant video game. There are several entertaining games built into the unit, such as Memory Race, and the Geko lets you compete against others or just yourself. The Geko 301 also adds an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter. This makes it much more useful when combined with a good quality map, especially in rough terrain.
One of the most useful features of the Garmin Geko GPS Navigation System is its inclusion of WAAS technology. WAAS was initiated by the FAA as way to make civilian GPS units accurate enough to use for precision approaches under instrument flight rules. Instead of the normal 100 meter resolution, WAAS enables the Geko to deliver accuracy to within 3 meters. This is almost essential for geo-caching and other fun hiking pursuits. It is also key to using the unit with a bicycle on known trails and roads. Owning and using the Geko means never being lost and always finding your destination right where you thought it would be.
